"I see the turtle in the clouds. Did I just say that right out loud?"
In the pantheon of Phish pranks, Halloween 2018 might be the greatest of all time. That's the night Phish "covered" the album í rokk by the obscure Scandinavian band Kasvot Växt — a band that, of course, didn't exist.
And from that elaborate, brilliant hoax came one of the most beloved Phish songs of the modern era: Turtle in the Clouds.
The Kasvot Växt Story
For those who weren't there (or weren't paying attention to the pre-show hype), here's what happened:
Phish has a Halloween tradition of covering an entire album by another artist — their "Musical Costume." In 2018, they announced they'd be covering í rokk by Kasvot Växt, a supposed 1980s Scandinavian prog-rock band.
The Phish community went into detective mode. Who was Kasvot Växt? Where was the album? Why couldn't anyone find it?
Because it didn't exist. Phish had written and recorded an entire fake album, complete with fake album art, fake liner notes, and fake band members. The whole thing was an elaborate prank — and the music was genuinely, surprisingly great.
Enter the Turtle
Turtle in the Clouds emerged as the standout track. With its earworm chorus — "I see the turtle in the clouds / Did I just say that right out loud / Clueless Wallob / Clueless Wallob" — it immediately wormed its way into fans' hearts.
The character of Clueless Wallob — the turtle in the clouds — became an instant fan favorite. Something about that phrase captures the Phish experience perfectly: looking up, seeing something magical, and wondering if you just said something weird out loud.
Why TITC Endures
What makes Turtle in the Clouds special is how quickly it went from prank to genuine setlist staple. The song has appeared regularly in Phish sets since Halloween 2018, and fans genuinely love hearing it.
The "Clueless Wallob" chant has become a crowd participation moment. The song has generated its own merchandise ecosystem. And the turtle has become one of Phish's most recognizable modern symbols.
It's the perfect example of how Phish can create something as a joke and have it become something deeply meaningful to their community.
