The Lizards: The Phish Song, The Gamehendge Story, and the Land of Lizards

on

"The lizards were the first to arrive."

If Run Like an Antelope is Phish's adrenaline anthem, The Lizards is their fantasy epic. It's part of the Gamehendge saga — Trey Anastasio's senior thesis at Goddard College that became the mythological backbone of Phish's early catalog.

The Gamehendge Connection

The Lizards is one of several songs that tell the story of Gamehendge, a fictional land populated by the Lizard People. In this mythical world, the Lizards are a peaceful, ancient civilization — "the first to arrive" — who live under the tyranny of Wilson (yes, THAT Wilson).

The song tells the story of Rutherford the Brave, a knight who enters the Land of Lizards. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of this fantasy world with Phish's characteristic blend of storytelling and musical complexity.

The full Gamehendge narrative was performed in its entirety only a handful of times in Phish's career, making those performances some of the most sought-after recordings in the tape-trading community.

The Music

Musically, The Lizards is a journey. It moves through composed sections of intricate Phish composition, building through multiple movements before arriving at its triumphant peaks. It's the kind of song that reminds you why Phish is unlike any other band — they can make you feel like you're actually IN the Land of Lizards.

The song features some of Trey's most melodic guitar work, with passages that are simultaneously complex and deeply emotional. It's a song that rewards repeated listening — there are always new details to discover.

Why Fans Love It

There's something about The Lizards that hits different. Maybe it's the fantasy escapism. Maybe it's the musical complexity. Maybe it's the way the crowd erupts when they hear those opening notes. Whatever it is, The Lizards has earned a permanent place in the Phish pantheon.

For many fans, getting a Lizards at a show feels special — it's not an every-show song, and when it appears in a setlist, it means the band is in a storytelling mood.
