Why I Tell Artists to Skip Paid AI Video Generators (and Use Free ffmpeg Instead)

on

This is the most counterintuitive advice in the whole Stack: do not spend money on an AI video generator for your product videos.

It feels backwards. AI video is the exciting thing. But for art products, the evidence from our own content was clear.

What we saw

Real footage and mockup pans of the actual product did better than generated visuals. People can feel when something looks like AI filler, and with art, that look kills trust. A buyer who sees warped text, melting edges, or a print that does not match the listing assumes the product is as unreliable as the video.

The anti-slop technique

The best method we found is simple: take the print's own illustration style and bring it into the video as animated elements. A real photo or mockup of the product stays the hero, and motion graphics drawn from your art carry the energy. The art stays accurate because it is the real art.

Where AI still helps

AI is excellent at assembly. Writing the plan, choosing the cuts, building captions, producing the commands that stitch it together. It is a fantastic editor. It is a risky photographer.

ffmpeg: the free secret weapon

ffmpeg is a free program that runs on your computer and does almost anything with video: pans over a mockup, composites, crops to vertical, adds captions, joins clips. On its own it is intimidating, because it is driven by typed commands. With an AI assistant writing those commands for you, it replaces a pile of paid tools.

You say, "Make a 15 second vertical video slowly panning across this framed print with the title at the bottom." The assistant writes the command, runs it, and shows you the result. Adjust and repeat.

Practical rules we follow

  • Design-critical shots, where the artwork has to read clearly, stay real.
  • No fake text, labels, or logos on screen. Ever.
  • Two cuts per platform when needed, such as a standard cut and a shop cut for TikTok.
  • The first frame should not be black. It becomes the thumbnail.
  • Use original or royalty-free music, and a different track per video.

When might paid tools make sense?

Later, once you have steady customers and know exactly what you are missing. Paying for a video generator before you have a consistent flow of customers is spending to avoid a problem you do not have yet.

Takeaway

The path to better content for an artist is not more generated imagery. It is better use of the real thing you made. Free software and an assistant get you there.
