Keeping Your Keys Safe: The One Rule That Matters

on

Handing an AI assistant the keys to your shop can sound risky. It does not have to be, if you follow one rule.

Your keys live on your computer, in your accounts, under your control. They go nowhere else.

What that means in practice

  • You create every key yourself, inside your own account.
  • The key goes into a settings file stored on your own machine, not into a chat with a stranger, a shared document, or an email.
  • Nobody else in the system, including the people who made the guide, ever receives your keys.

The Stack says this out loud. The assistant is instructed that credentials get pasted into your tools and never sent to anyone, and if you offer a password somewhere it should not go, it refuses and tells you where it belongs.

Easy habits that protect you

Name them. When you create a key, label it for what it is for, so you can tell later which one to delete.

Limit them. Where a tool lets you choose what a key can do, grant only what the job needs.

Do not post them. Screenshots of a settings page are the classic leak. Crop or blur before sharing anything when you ask for help in a group.

Rotate when unsure. If you think a key slipped out, delete it in the tool and make a new one. Nothing breaks except the old key.

What if something looks wrong?

Check your tool's activity or order history for anything you did not do. If you spot something, delete the key first, then investigate. Deleting is always safe.

Why this is not a big scary thing

The main reason keys matter is that they are real access. That is also why they are useful. A key that can do nothing is a key that helps nothing. The skill is not avoiding keys. It is handling them like you would handle the spare key to your studio: kept somewhere you control, shared with no one.

A word on licensing and sharing

The same thinking applies to the Stack itself. It is licensed to one buyer, and the assistant is told to kindly decline if you ask it to repackage the files for someone else. If a friend wants it, the kind move is to send them to the page where they can get their own.

Next: the stories. First, the bug that taught us how many beginners get tripped by something as simple as a moved folder.
